The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has suspended the membership of the National Badminton Federation of Russia (NBFR). The decision was made at a meeting of the BWF council on November 11 in connection with the inclusion of the badminton federations of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions into the NFBR.
“It was found that the NBFR violated the terms of membership in the BWF by including into its jurisdiction territories that fall under the jurisdiction of another member. BWF emphasized that solution, allowing Russian citizens to participate in tournaments under the auspices of the BWF as independent neutral athletes remains in force. The organization intends to change its procedures to allow such players to register for tournaments directly.
The ban on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in BWF competitions was introduced in March 2022, after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine. On March 28, 2023, the International Olympic Committee recommended that federations allow athletes who do not support the Russian operation in Ukraine and are not associated with the Russian armed forces or national security agencies to compete in neutral status.
