The authorities of Buryatia intend to euthanize stray dogs from among those caught and placed in a shelter. As a source in the regional government told Kommersant, the euthanasia procedure will only affect animals that have not found owners after a certain period of detention in a shelter.

“There is such an initiative. It has to be formalized as a regional law, approved through the Khural of the republic. The deputies will determine the maximum terms for keeping animals after capture,” the interlocutor specified.

The press service of the government, citing data from the Veterinary Department of Buryatia, noted that in 2023 the number of cases of dog attacks on minors increased in the region. Since the beginning of the year, 367 such cases have been noted, and for the same period last year there were 269.

As previously reported, on July 12, State Duma deputies accepted amendments to the law on the responsible treatment of animals. Changes in the law allow the regions to develop their own legislation governing the treatment of stray animals. The new version of the federal law does not contain a direct ban on the euthanasia of homeless animals.
