Residents of the Irkutsk region could not see a meteorite in the sky
Residents of the Irkutsk region, who reported a possible meteorite fall, could actually observe a bright fireball, both of cosmic and artificial origin. Astronomer Alexander Yakushechkin told RIA Novosti about this.
Earlier it became known that late in the evening on Thursday, April 6, a meteorite could fall in the Ust-Kutsky district of the Irkutsk region. Numerous cameras recorded the fall of a celestial body.
In turn, Yakushechkin, in an interview with the agency, noted that it was still premature to talk about the meteorite.
“Here it is correct to talk about the flight of a bright fireball, which, most likely, burned up in dense layers of the atmosphere,” the expert said.
He added that this bolide could be both an object of cosmic and artificial origin from the Earth’s orbit – for example, part of a satellite or its fragment.
