The Russian Embassy in Ottawa will send a note to the Canadian Foreign Ministry regarding the invitation to the country’s parliament and honoring the veteran of the SS Galicia division. About this in the commentary to RIA Novosti reported Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov.
“The embassy will take appropriate official steps. We will, of course, seek clarification from the Canadian government,” he said.
According to Stepanov, inviting the veteran of the SS Galicia division is not a mistake. This is “a consequence of the impunity of former Nazi criminals, the impunity of the activities of the Canadian Ukrainian Congress, which consists of children and grandchildren, most of them descendants of these same Nazi minions, punishers, and SS men,” he explained.
On September 22, 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka was invited to a meeting of the Canadian Parliament in honor of the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. He was presented as a war hero who fought for the First Ukrainian Division. Later, Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota, who invited the veteran of the SS Galicia division, brought apologies.
The SS division “Galicia” was created in Lvov in 1943. The backbone of the division was made up of Ukrainian nationalists. In May 2020, the Kiev District Administrative Court recognized the division’s symbols as Nazi.
