The All-Russian Union of Insurers spoke about the coverage of damage in case of drone attacks

The basic insurance policies include risks from the fall of drones, their parts or cargo, said RBC representative of the All-Russian Union of Insurers (VSS). At the same time, insurance compensation may be denied if the drone crashed as a result of hostilities.

The representative of the ARIA clarified that if the property of a citizen is insured against “falling on the insured property of aircraft and / or parts thereof”, then the fall of the drone will be an insured event. However, in accordance with Art. 964 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation (grounds for the release of the insurer from the payment of insurance compensation), the insurer is exempt from payment of compensation when the insured event occurred due to:

• exposure to a nuclear explosion, radiation or radioactive contamination;
• military operations, as well as maneuvers or other military measures;
• civil war, civil unrest or strikes.

The representative of the ARIA clarified that the fall of a drone, its parts or cargo carried by it, which occurred as a result of hostilities, will be recognized as an insured event only if the insured has a contract covering the risk of “falling aircraft and their parts” in the presence of an extension war risks insurance. By default, such an extension is not provided for in the agreement, he stressed.

Since the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, Russian authorities have regularly reported attacks by unmanned aerial vehicles. In particular, on May 3, the press service of the Kremlin reportedthat at night two drones attacked the Kremlin residence of the president. After that, a ban on drone flights was introduced in 40 Russian regions.
