The memorial cross to the Polish victims of political repressions, which disappeared on the Levashovskaya Pustosh in St. Petersburg, was taken away for restoration.

“They took it away for restoration, that’s for sure,” the cemetery administration told Kommersant.

One of the first about the disappearance of the memorial informed the head of the Center “Returned Names” historian Anatoly Razumov. At the same time, two main versions of the loss of the monument appeared in the media: according to one, it was dismantled due to vandals, according to the other, because of a tree that fell on the cross. When asked by Kommersant which of them is correct, the interlocutor in the cemetery administration noted that, apparently, both. However, who exactly removed the monument, they found it difficult to answer.

In a conversation with Kommersant, Mr. Razumov expressed skepticism about the fact that the cross was dismantled due to restoration, since, according to him, the administration of the memorial in Levashovo was not aware of the incident. “Do you have any idea how much he weighs? Not one ton! How could it have been removed so discreetly? – the historian expressed bewilderment.

A similar position is held by the deputy of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Boris Vishnevsky. “But where is the criminal case on vandalism then? Where is the photo? Is the damage so serious that they cleaned everything to a flat area, taking away a multi-ton structure?” he wrote in his Telegram channel.

The politician added that the city committee for state control, use and protection of historical and cultural monuments told him that although the cemetery itself is a cultural heritage site, the Polish cross is not among the items of protection. “I wrote to the Central Internal Affairs Directorate, asking to conduct an inspection and initiate a case, and to Piotrovsky (vice-governor Boris Piotrovsky.— ”b”) to report what is known about the loss of the monument, and take measures to return it to its place, ”concluded Boris Vishnevsky.

In early July, in the Shlisselburg fortress (Oreshek; Noteburg) in the Leningrad region, removed memorial plaque to the Poles-prisoners. Then the employees of the institution, in a conversation with journalists, suggested that she was taken for restoration in preparation for the celebration of the 700th anniversary of Shlisselburg.
