The 23-year-old Muscovite who broke the sculpture of Princess Turandot spoke about his motives

The antihero, who climbed onto the “Princess Turandot” sculpture near the Vakhtangov Theater in the center of Moscow on Saturday, comes to his senses in a hospital bed and deeply repents. The entire theater scene in Moscow is outraged by the 23-year-old Muscovite’s misconduct, and he himself assures that he knew nothing about either the princess or the legendary actress Yulia Borisova, who played Turandot. And he climbed onto the sculpture to attract attention, since he lost his job.

It was possible to reconstruct the picture of the incident thanks to cameras and numerous eyewitnesses who walked along Old Arbat on the evening of the holiday.

– I saw a man climb, the man was clearly drunk. He took off his backpack and jacket. He had one goal – to climb, witnesses recall. – There were a lot of onlookers there, they encouraged him. When he climbed up, he raised his hand up, and the next moment the sculpture broke. He flew down and hit his head on the fountain.

The climber turned out to be a 23-year-old resident of the southwestern district of Moscow. He cut his forehead and broke both heels.

“This is instant karma,” he told the police who spoke with him at the hospital. – The cut on the head has already been mended.

– Why did you climb on the sculpture?

– For the sake of shocking. I was drunk, there were a lot of people, I wanted attention. Just spontaneous stupidity. I understand that I am completely wrong. But he himself paid for it with his own health. For a drunk, the sea is knee-deep, and in my case, the fountain is up to the heel. He hit the paving stones and fell straight into the water. But I didn’t have time to group, nothing.

– How did you end up in that place?

– Half a day walking with friends, drinking. A bottle of gin, but not in one person. In general, I drink twice a week, but not strong, but low-alcohol drinks. I was not in a position to give any comments after the emergency. I climbed in, everyone applauded me, and when I got down, it broke.

– Were there any events that upset you that day?

– It was, but it doesn’t matter… Well, they didn’t hire me. I passed the internship, everything was fine, but they said that I was not in the format of the company. This is how they explained it. Officially unemployed. The last place of work is in a warehouse.

– Did you have any sports training?

– I have been involved in industrial mountaineering from time to time for a long time. He worked a lot on construction sites.

– Have you ever been in police custody before?

– Everything happened, stormy youth. Several times I was in the department for drinking alcohol. As a child, he left home. I thought that it would be difficult for my mother to drag both me and my younger sister at the same time, and I decided to make her life easier. A few days later he returned. This was ten years ago.

– Do you lose control of yourself when you’re drunk?

– Well, yes. Alcohol is made for fun, but sometimes control is lost… And it happens. I inadequately perceived everything when I climbed. This story is probably the most terrible and unpleasant thing that happened to me.

– By the way, did you watch the theater production? Who played Princess Turandot?

– No, I didn’t look, I don’t know.

Doctors told the conqueror Turandot that he would have to lie down for several months, perhaps then there would be an operation. As for the punishment, the vandal will be issued an administrative fine (he doesn’t know anything about this yet). Meanwhile, theater workers complain that either alcoholics or homeless people are constantly bathing in the fountain, and some kind of control should be established over the sculpture.

The fountain-monument “Princess Turandot” was installed near the Vakhtangov Theater in 1997 in honor of Yevgeny Vakhtangov’s last lifetime performance of the same name. The sculptor was Alexander Burganov. In the central part of the oval bowl there is a throne on which the sparkling gilded Princess Turandot sits. The monument is not on the balance sheet of Vakhtangov’s tetra; this is the area of ​​​​responsibility of the State Budgetary Institution “Gormost”.

In 2001, the sculpture was already attacked by vandals – nonferrous metal hunters sawed off the princess’s hand and part of her dress to sell for scrap.
