A few minutes ago in Astana (Kazakhstan) the match for the title of world chess champion ended. In a tense struggle, the Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi lost to Ding Liren. Thus, an athlete from China became the 17th world chess champion.
According to the results of 14 games with classical time control, the first of which was played on April 7, the winner could not be determined. The score was equal – 7:7. The confrontation continued in a tie-break. The first three games were also drawn.
The outcome of the match was determined by the final, fourth, game. It ended on the 68th move. Nepomniachtchi, who played with the white pieces, conceded defeat. The final score is 2.5-1.5 in favor of the Chinese.
The total prize fund of the tournament is 2 million euros. Ding Liren will receive 1.1 million euros for the victory, and Nepomniachtchi – 900 thousand.
The Russian got the right to fight for the chess crown after he won the Candidates Tournament. His opponent was to be the current world chess champion Magnus Carlsen. But the Norwegian refused to confirm his title. At the Candidates Tournament, Ding Liren took second place, which allowed him, according to FIDE rules, after Carlsen’s refusal to fight for the championship title.
The Norwegian became world champion in 2013 by beating Indian Viswanathan Anand. After that, he defended the title four times (the world championship is held every two years).
