Officials in Thailand’s Lopburi have developed a plan to combat macaques

Officials in Thailand’s Lopburi have developed a plan to combat the macaques that filled the city’s streets decades ago.

How writes Associated Press Lopburi macaques are a symbol of local culture and a major tourist attraction. But after years of dangerous human conflicts, as well as several failed attempts to establish peace by controlling the monkey population, the patience of local residents and authorities has run out.

The final straw came in March when a woman sprained her knee after a monkey knocked her down while trying to grab food, and another hungry macaque knocked a man off his motorcycle.

According to officials’ plans, approximately two and a half thousand urban monkeys will be captured and placed in large enclosures. A certain number of monkeys will be left free.
