Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev has apologized for shouting obscenities at the referee during the semi-final match of the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai. On March 1, he was awarded a technical defeat in a match against tennis player from Kazakhstan Alexander Bublik.
Rublev in an interview with the YouTube channel “More!” said that he apologized several times. “It’s my fault, it’s unacceptable to behave like that, to raise your voice like that. It doesn’t matter if it’s a referee, a line judge, a spectator, or an ordinary person. I am no one to allow myself to do this, no matter whether he is right or wrong, this is generally unacceptable. Of course, I feel guilty for this. I’m ashamed that I allowed myself to do this,” said the Russian tennis player.
Andrei Rublev noted that he “allowed himself many times” to behave this way “before this incident,” but there was less attention to this. He said it was hard for him to be accused of words he didn’t say.
The incident occurred in early March at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. After the completion of the last point in the eleventh game of the third set, Rublev shouted at the line judge, who, in his opinion, made a mistake and looked at the out after Bublik’s hit. After disqualification, Rublev had to forfeit all prize money and ranking points earned in the tournament. However, during the consideration of the tennis player’s appeal, the ATP decided that deprivation of points “would be a disproportionate punishment.”
