Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal has announced that he is withdrawing from the French Open (Roland Garros) due to a hip injury and expects 2024 to be the last year of his career. The 22-time Grand Slam winner, the Spaniard, who turns 37 in June, announced the news at a press conference at his tennis academy in Spain.
Nadal has not competed since losing the second round of the Australian Open on 18 January. After the examination, the tennis player’s manager said that he might need up to two months to recover. However, he missed tournament after tournament.
At a press conference, Rafael Nadal said he did not want to set a date for his return, but expected it to take months. “You never know how things will turn out, but my intention is that next year will be my last,” he said (quoted by AP).
“I’m going to stop, I’m not going to train. I’m not ready to train,” said the tennis player, alternating between answers in Spanish and English. “These have been long months with many moments of disappointment and I can deal with disappointment, but there comes a time when you have to stop,” Nadal said. “You can’t keep demanding more and more from your body because there comes a point where your body throws the white flag,” he said.
Roland Garros kicks off in Paris on May 28th. Now Rafael Nadal, who was the first racket of the world for 209 weeks of his career, occupies the 14th position in the ATP rankings.
