Telegram users are getting dizzy – Kommersant FM

Fraudsters have begun to fake “circles” on Telegram. At the beginning of the year, scammers began to massively edit user votes or create them using neural networks. Now they have added so-called circles, short videos inside the messenger. As usual, the main goal of scammers is to lure money from their interlocutors. A video message on behalf of the alleged account owner reinforces the victim’s trust. To create a fake, a voice sample and a photograph are enough. As a rule, they are taken in the public domain on social networks and, thanks to new technologies, these false videos are created.
Alexey Drozd, head of SearchInform’s information security department, told Kommersant FM how it works and whether users can protect themselves: “The technology itself is a deepfake. The technology has reached the point where your mother is shown here and there.
The scammer takes information from the public domain, most often from social networks, in particular, voice and video samples, and sometimes even photographs. Accordingly, with a slight movement of the hand, this whole thing turns into a deepfake.
The attacker writes phrases, and the synthesizer voices them in the victim’s voice. Now we put this track under the video. Another neuron is engaged in combining the movement of the lips of the picture with the voiced text. Over time, such instruments become cheaper down to zero, which leads to a boom in such fraud.
If you suddenly receive a message that is out of context, you should try to contact this person, if you care about him, in some alternative ways. That is, it’s stupid to write in the messenger: “Hello, is that you?” How will the scammers respond if they take control? There are very high-quality fakes, especially because it is a generated video.”
The largest number of fake videos are noticed on Telegram, but the trend extends to all instant messengers and social networks. However, users will have to protect themselves from cybercriminals on their own. It is impossible to moderate such a volume of content, explained Pavel Myasoedov, director and partner of IT-Reserve:
“Such content can be distributed anywhere. The task is to steal users’ money, no matter whether within a “circle” on Telegram or within some other social network. Telegram is also growing, many users are moving to this platform. Fraudsters understand this, which is why we see the emergence of new schemes here, especially among the Russian-speaking audience.
At the same time, at the level of account substitution, when it is not clear who writes to you, Telegram can mark that this contact is not in your address book. Naturally, this will trigger your attention, you will more carefully study the user’s header, signatures, and so on. But at the level of video analysis, this is almost technologically impossible, that is, it is very expensive.
Given the volume of video traffic that goes through instant messengers in the form of files, it is almost impossible to get into each of them and inspect the data packet in order to understand what is happening there and how. This is very, very expensive, and the servers will simply be overloaded.
Telegram, of course, will not agree to this option, they will simply warn you that these users are fake.”
In 2023, the number of attacks through instant messengers accounted for 22.5% of all types of cybercrime. But the leaders are still attempts at telephone fraud, which accounted for more than half of all cases, the Central Bank reported.
