Telegram traffic of Russian Internet users has grown by tens of percent over the year, according to comments provided to Vedomosti by representatives of large telecom operators. In the Megafon network, traffic from January to September 2023 increased by 80% year-on-year, in the Tele2 network – by almost 100%. A Beeline representative reported that traffic on Telegram increased 1.5 times during this period. In the MTS network, Telegram traffic increased by 35%. The operators do not disclose absolute numbers.

Denis Kuskov, CEO of the analytical agency Telecom Daily, speaks about a two-fold increase in messenger traffic. According to the agency, in the first nine months of 2022, the total volume of Telegram traffic from the Big Four operators was about 25 TB (or about 6 TB per operator). For the same period in 2023, the total traffic was already about 50 TB, Kuskov specified. This is primarily due to the growth of the user audience, the increase in the number of channels and channel networks that publish a huge amount of media content, as well as the launch of the “stories” function (short videos or photos that disappear 24 hours after publication).
