How to study and pass exams in classes of one student at a time

Our country is so large and diverse that there are schools in which there are not enough places, and mobile “red plagues” for northern nomadic peoples, and corners where by the time of graduation there is only one student left at a desk. It turns out that there are a lot of such loners in Russia, and it is much more difficult for them to study: sometimes the surprises that the whole village had one old textbook, which was rewritten a long time ago, are revealed only during exams. We learned what difficulties single graduates have and how they overcome the situation.

– The successes of a loner are usually jealously watched by his entire small homeland, because he was nominated by it for higher education as the most capable, hopes are pinned on him, while his former classmates have already passed from schoolchildren to working hands, which in remote regions with difficult The climate is always lacking,” says literature teacher Yulia Petrovna, sharing her impressions of working in Yakutia. “That is, the responsibility of such a “delegate to the most scientists in the village” is high, but it is much more difficult for individuals to achieve the expected success. In the worst corners of the country there are often shortages of teachers and textbooks, but this is not even the worst thing. Singles lack educational communication skills.

– How is that?

— At school, communication between students is not only everyday and entertaining, but also academically, as well as with teachers not only as part of the educational process. School is a multi-layered complex organism, built on interaction, and teaches not only the subjects of the curriculum, but also communications of all kinds: with elders, with younger ones, with peers, and with mentors. During recess, the school team has one type of communication, in a lesson, say, literature, another, and in physical education a third. Even asking your desk neighbor to let you copy it is, relatively speaking, educational communication. Sometimes cheating turns out to be the most suitable form of learning for a malicious lazy person. He cheats all the time – and is the best student. A friend’s shoulder and elbow are also very important in school. Due to their age, schoolchildren are equal to each other in many matters, including academics. And if a student with authority among his classmates is an excellent student, then you are practically guaranteed a good class. And the lonely eleventh grader is completely deprived of all this. He comes home, and there his brothers and sisters, who have completed eight years at most, already have a real adult life in the form of daily work.

A study of the issue shows that there are many more such “bear corners” of our vast country of single graduates lost behind their desks than it seems to the uninitiated resident of a big city. For example, in Yakutia in 2021, as many as 19 schools graduated just one eleventh-grader. Moreover, the director of one of these small schools in an Arctic village said that this is still luck, since there are years when some schools do not graduate at all, no one made it to the last grade. And somehow they were not in 14 out of 34 local uluses (districts consisting of naslegs, rural districts. – Author). In the Republic of Sakha, the statistics of graduates who successfully passed the Unified State Exam (22 thousand in 2023) are made mainly by schools in Yakutsk, while in Nizhneyansk (a village in the Arctic Circle), even before the pandemic, which reduced the number of people wishing to graduate from 11th grade in the region, the teaching staff school of 10 people, he taught all year and then entertained his only 11th-grader and a lonely 9th-grader at the prom, and some mass participation was observed only until the 6th–7th grade.

– We teach and teach one, but these children still go to the tundra after their parents, half-educated, and yet Sakha is 1/5 of all Russia! – sighs the Russian girl Yulia Petrovna, who sacrificed the comfort of the city for the sake of teaching those in the tundra.

But now the way out seems to be looming. If it burns out, it will also solve the problem with the lack of textbooks and educational communications. We are talking about the idea of finding single eleventh-graders across the country and digitizing them, gathering them into one consolidated virtual class, which teachers can simultaneously prepare for exams using unified textbooks using a special educational platform, and the students themselves will have the opportunity to communicate with each other about their studies and not only.

“The graduating class is very important,” Roxana Borovik, the initiator of the idea, first emphasizes when answering the question of what is needed to implement the project, called “11WE”. “Such children need not only to learn, but also to socialize, to integrate into a society that develops and changes every day. Having counted how many children in the Russian Federation graduate from school alone in a class, we were horrified! And they came up with the idea of creating a virtual class on the RuNet, in which single students from all over the country could prepare for exams for free under the guidance of experienced mentors and take trial versions of tests not alone, but in the company of each other. All we need for this is an online platform, and we already have it.

Graduation tests are just around the corner, and 11th grades with one student, as it turned out, exist not only in the Far North, but also in the Sverdlovsk, Novosibirsk, Volgograd, Samara regions and in other not at all “bearish” Russian regions.
