At a meeting of the State Council of Tatarstan, the deputies approved new amendments to the regional constitution in the first reading. According to Albert Khabibullin, head of the profile committee, the republic decided to abandon the “transitional period” to rename the post of president. The head of the republic will be called the head (rais) immediately after the introduction of the new law.
In December, the deputies made amendments to the constitution, according to which the republic refused the post of president after the expiration of the current term of Rustam Minnikhanov. However, the State Council has now decided to speed up the renunciation of the presidential status.
Amendments to the Constitution of Tatarstan were considered without any discussion. State Council Speaker Farid Mukhametshin insisted on this.
Tatarstan remained the only subject of the Russian Federation where the post of the president of the republic was preserved. The law on public authority in the regions, adopted at the end of 2021, obliged Tatarstan to change the constitution by January 1, 2023.
