Taiwan to increase military service from 4 months to 1 year

Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported that Taiwan’s chief executive, Tsai Ing-wen, announced today the decision to extend the mandatory military service period from 4 months to a year. The decision comes into force on January 1, 2024 and will affect recruits born after January 1, 2005. It is reported that the changes are caused by the need to ensure security against the backdrop of a “growing threat from mainland China.”
Tsai Ing-wen’s statement reportedly followed a series of meetings she held with senior Taiwanese officials to discuss economic and security issues.
After 2000, the island’s authorities constantly reduced the length of service for conscripts, focusing on the training of contract soldiers. In 2013, the draft term was limited to four months.
On the eve of the announcement by the island’s authorities, its defense department reported that between 6:00 a.m. on December 25 and 6:00 a.m. on December 26, 71 aircraft and seven ships of the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA) approached the island.
