FIFA President Gianni Infantino has been questioned by Swiss prosecutors as part of a criminal case in which he is accused of inciting abuse of power, violating official secrecy and obstructing an investigation. The newspaper reported Le Monde.
The investigation began in July 2020. Prosecutors are investigating three alleged secret meetings in 2016 and 2017 between Gianni Infantino and former Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber. He led FIFA investigations between 2015 and 2019 and stepped down in 2020 after he was suspected of involvement in the scandal.
According to investigators, during secret meetings, Mr. Infantino sought information about investigations against FIFA and its former leaders with the intention of influencing the course of these investigations.
The head of FIFA expressed the hope that the proceedings will be completed by March, when the organization’s presidential elections will be held. They will take place on March 16 at the FIFA Congress in the capital of Rwanda, Kigali. Gianni Infantino is the only candidate.
