Swimming tournament “Popov Cup” returns to Yekaterinburg

All-Russian swimming competitions “Alexander Popov Cup” will be held in Yekaterinburg. This was announced by the famous athlete himself, four-time Olympic swimming champion Alexander Popov at the International University Sports Festival.
“Alexander Popov Cup” began to be played in 2008 in Yekaterinburg. But in 2017, the organizers decided to move the tournament to Kazan due to the fact that there is no suitable pool in the capital of the Urals. Now there is a Water Sports Palace.
“From this year, we are starting again from October to hold the Cup of our illustrious countryman in Yekaterinburg and we hope that from 2024 it will already be here and these will be international starts for children and youth,” said Alexander Serebrennikov, President of the Swimming Federation of the Sverdlovsk Region.
According to Alexander Popov, this year the program will include only water sports. In the next – it will be transformed into a multisport.
“Next year we will aim at complex competitions – in water sports, and look at the sports, individual and game, that are cultivated in the Sverdlovsk region, and try to include them,” said Alexander Popov.
MK-Ural previously reported that On April 13, the Palace of Water Sports began to operate in Yekaterinburg. It is the largest sports facility of its kind in Russia. The start of its work was given by the governor of the Sverdlovsk region Evgeny Kuyvashev and the assistant to the President of Russia Igor Levitin.
