Swedish diplomat: Trump’s re-election could lead to the collapse of NATO

Anders Åslund, a Swedish economist and diplomat, expressed concerns about the possible re-election of former US President Donald Trump and his impact on the global political arena. In an interview with journalist Eynulla Fatullayev, he stressed that Trump never spoke negatively about Russian President Vladimir Putin, and his actions give the impression that he is working in the interests of the Kremlin.
Aslund noted that Trump has in the past expressed intentions to weaken NATO and even withdraw from the alliance. He cited the example of John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, who argued that Trump could realize his intentions if he was re-elected. The expert warned that such a course of events could undermine the structure of NATO.
According to Åslund, Trump also poses a threat to the security of the West in general. Many countries, including the Baltics and Poland, believed that the United States always supported them, regardless of the political situation. However, according to the expert, the reality may be different.
In the past, Trump has argued that his re-election in 2024 would allow him to prevent a potential third world war. He also linked the multibillion-dollar US aid to Ukraine to the big earnings of his successor Joe Biden’s family.
