The Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket was launched from the Vostochny cosmodrome with the first Russian lunar station Luna-25 in almost 50 years. The flight should take from four and a half to five and a half days.
In an hour, Luna-25 should separate from the Fregat upper stage. It is expected that the station will spend from three to seven days in orbit, preparing for a soft landing. The landing site was an area in the southern polar region of the Moon, north of the Boguslavsky crater. After landing, “Luna-25” should be engaged in scientific research, the term of its work is designed for a year
The Luna-25 station consists of two main parts: the lower one is the landing platform, and the upper one is an unpressurized instrument container. On board is about 31 kg of various scientific equipment designed to study the lunar regolith and exosphere. In particular, the station has a lunar manipulator capable of excavating soil and taking samples of it.
This is the first expedition to the lunar pole, all Soviet lunar stations landed in the equatorial zone. The previous Luna 24 mission was sent in 1976 and delivered 170 g of lunar soil to earth.
