Professor at the First Moscow State Medical University named after Sechenov Andrey Shestakov told Izvestia why the amputation of the foot of the Olympic champion in ice dancing Roman Kostomarov was so necessary.
As the surgeon emphasized, the main diagnosis is sepsis, which launched the inflammatory process throughout the athlete’s body.
“What caused it is difficult to judge,” Shestakov said. Purulent foci begin to “fly” throughout the body, inseminating everything. “The same process went through the circulatory system, and Kostomarov’s weakest point in this situation turned out to be his leg,” the professor explained. Amputation, according to him, the doctors did due to the fact that severe necrosis on the leg increases the release of toxins into the body. “It is vital that the toxins do not completely spread,” Shestakov stressed.
