Jens Stoltenberg will remain as NATO Secretary General until October 1, 2024
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Wednesday, July 4, that he would remain in his post for another year, Reuters reports.
The extension of the powers of the Secretary General is stated in the official statement of the North Atlantic Alliance, the agency clarifies.
Stoltenberg will lead the alliance until October 1, 2024.
The information was confirmed by Stoltenberg himself on Twitter.
“I am very flattered by the decision of the NATO allies…”, he said.
He also wrote: “Transatlantic links between Europe and North America have ensured our freedom and security for almost 75 years.” And “in a more dangerous world,” as the Secretary General put it today, “alliance is more important than ever.”
The possible extension of the powers of Stoltenberg became known the day before. However, he himself previously stated that he did not seek to remain in office, only in case of emergency he would remain in charge of the bloc.
