Stoltenberg announced the agreement on the terms of Ukraine’s invitation to NATO

Ukraine will be sent an invitation to join NATO after all the conditions are met, as well as the unanimous consent of all members of the bloc. This was stated by the Secretary General of the organization Jens Stoltenberg, writes Reuters.

General Secretary earlier offered cancel for Ukraine the action plan for joining the bloc, which will allow it to shorten the process of accession. He noted that the “formal” conditions for joining the alliance would be softened for Ukraine, and a Ukraine-NATO Council (SUN) would be created. According to him, this will be a “positive and strong signal” for Ukraine.

At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the Secretary General’s wording on simplified entry into the organization. Zelensky was outraged by the lack of deadlines for both the invitation and the country’s membership. The Ukrainian leader concluded that the NATO countries are not ready for such a step, calling the “uncertainty” of the alliance a weakness.

The NATO summit takes place from 11 to 12 July in Vilnius (Lithuania). It was reported that during this event a number of important decisions would be made, including the discussion of Ukraine’s accession to NATO. In addition, the summit is scheduled to discuss Sweden’s membership in the alliance.

July 10 Stoltenberg declared following a trilateral closed meeting in Vilnius, which was attended by Turkish President Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, that Ankara agreed to ratify the protocol on the admission of Stockholm to the military bloc. At the same time, he did not name the exact date when the Turkish parliament would ratify the accession of Sweden.
