State of emergency declared in Peru

The Peruvian government has declared a state of emergency in several regions of the country, reported El Peruano newspaper. This regime will operate for a month against the backdrop of ongoing protests since December after the impeachment of the country’s president.
A state of emergency, following the decree of the authorities, has been declared since January 15 in the independent province of Callao, as well as in the departments of Cusco, Lima and Puno, the province of Andahuaylas in the department of Apurimac and the provinces of Tambopata and Tahuamanu in Madre de Dios, in one of the districts in the department Moquegua. In addition, the measure will apply to several routes.
“In these districts, the constitutional rights to the inviolability of the home and freedom of movement within the national territory, assembly, personal freedom and security are suspended,” the newspaper writes.
The decree, as noted, was signed by the President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, along with the head of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otarola, and the heads of the ministries of defense, interior and justice.
In early December last year, President Pedro Castillo dissolved parliament, which was supposed to consider his impeachment for the third time. Despite this, the deputies held the scheduled meeting and supported the initiative. Castillo was removed from power and arrested for attempting a coup. Dina Boluarte (she was vice president before the impeachment announcement) persuaded parliament to organize presidential elections in 2024 instead of 2026, when the mandate of Castillo, elected in 2021, should have ended.
Supporters of the president staged large-scale protests that continued throughout December last year and stopped for the New Year holidays and resumed in the Puno region on January 6th. The demonstrators demand the resignation of Boluarte and the holding of new elections for the head of state. According to the latest data cited by the Russian Embassy in Peru, 45 people have died during the protests since mid-December.
