State of emergency declared in Novokakhovka district

In the Novokakhovka urban district, an emergency situation (ES) was introduced after the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. The order was signed by the mayor of Nova Kakhovka Vladimir Leontiev, informed TASS.
“Introduce an emergency regime for the relevant authorities and forces of the unified state system for the prevention and elimination of emergency situations in the Novokakhovka urban district from 12:00 on June 6, 2023,” the message says.
The administration of the Novokakhovka urban district said that the reason for the explosion of the hydroelectric power station was the shelling, which led to the destruction of three spans under water pressure. The authorities called Ukrainian troops responsible for the attack. According to their estimates, the blow was delivered by the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the MLRS “Alder” (RS-2).
Kakhovskaya HPP was shelled on the night of June 6. As a result, the upper part of the HPP was destroyed, which caused an uncontrolled discharge of water. According to the mayor of Novaya Kakhovka Leontiev, the restoration of the station is impossible. Leontiev admitted that the maximum rise of water could be 12 m.
Russian authorities started evacuation of people “from all flooded areas.” According to the mayor of the city, it is planned to take out the inhabitants of about 300 houses. The water is expected to drop to normal levels within 72 hours.
