State Department: Ukraine’s entry into NATO during the conflict would mean the start of a US war with Russia

Ukraine’s entry into NATO while it is in a state of conflict would be inappropriate. Then this would mean the beginning of the war between the United States and Russia. Following the results of the first day of the NATO summit in Vilnius, the member countries of the alliance accepted a communiqué reaffirming the 2008 commitment that Ukraine should become a member of NATO. At the same time, the statement says that Kyiv will be able to receive an invitation only after reaching an agreement between the allies and “fulfilling the conditions.” The document does not indicate specific terms for inviting Ukraine to NATO and its membership in the alliance.

At the same time, in the communiqué highlightsthat NATO does not seek conflict with Russia and does not pose a threat to it.

In Kyiv declaredthat are not surprised by this decision of the alliance. Earlier today, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky criticized on Twitter the wording about Ukraine’s future membership in NATO. In particular, he was outraged by the lack of deadlines for both the invitation and the country’s membership. The Ukrainian leader concluded that the bloc was not ready for such a step, calling NATO’s “uncertainty” a weakness.
