Spring hunting canceled in Stavropol Territory

The decision was made at a meeting of the council for hunting and hunting economy. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Stavropol Territory, the establishment of a ban on spring hunting in the territory of the region was adopted “in order to rationally use hunting resources, increase their numbers and preserve rare and endangered species of birds.”

The ban is associated with mass death animals, including common cranes listed in the Red Book, in the last months of 2022. The death of animals was recorded in 13 districts of the region. According to preliminary information, about 2,000 common cranes and other animals died, including foxes, hares, wolves and several species of birds of prey. On the fact of the death of animals, the investigating authorities in the Petrovsky and Aleksandrovsky districts initiated criminal cases in connection with the violation of the rules established for the fight against diseases and pests of plants, which, through negligence, entailed grave consequences. Both cases have now been transferred for investigation to the regional department of the Investigative Committee of Russia.

Another reason for the ban on hunting could be the presence of the causative agent of tularemia in the remains of dead animals. This was reported to Kommersant by environmental activist Andrei Fokin, citing a response from the Stavropol Interdistrict Environmental Prosecutor’s Office. In this response (available to Kommersant), it is reported that as a result of the analysis of the remains of dead animals, the causative agent of this dangerous disease was found in their tissues.

The same document states that currently “an increased level of tularemia is being recorded among residents of the enzootic territories of the Stavropol Territory, as well as among persons traveling to these territories to hunt. The disease is transmitted by skinning and butchering the carcass of an infected animal.” The same document says that when taking samples, traces of zinc phosphide were also detected, which, according to preliminary information, became the cause of the mass death of representatives of the animal world.
