Spotify to limit monetization for white noise podcasts – Kommersant

Streaming service Spotify has announced that it will remove white noise podcasts from the Ambassador Ads content monetization program from October 1. This category includes tracks with the sound of waves, forests, rain, etc. About this reported Bloomberg, citing sources within the company.
White noise podcasts collect up to 3 million listens daily on the platform, and their creators earn up to $18,000 per month. Spotify promoted noise podcasts as part of a policy to attract new users to the podcast service, but were unhappy with the result: such tracks work “in the background” instead of engaging active listeners.
The company calculated that they could generate an additional $38 million a year if they removed noise tracks from the news feed and redirected users to other content. Spotify no longer intends to support white noise songwriters, but they can continue to monetize content through paid subscriptions, third-party advertising, and support from listeners.
