Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada Anthony Rota said he is resigning amid the scandal that arose after inviting 98-year-old Jaroslav Hunku to parliament.

As previously reported, on Friday Rota invited Hunka on the occasion of the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. The pensioner was introduced as a “Ukrainian-Canadian World War II veteran” who fought “for Ukrainian independence against the Russians.” Later it became known that Hunku was a member of the 14th Grenadier Volunteer Division of the SS “Galicia” troops.

On Tuesday, Rota announced that he was informing members of parliament that he would be stepping down.
