The Riigikogu Foreign Affairs Committee proposed to consider the issue of using the name Königsberg instead of Kaliningrad, should from a press release from the Estonian Parliament.
Committee Chairman Marko Mihkelson believes that it is necessary to abandon the Soviet name of the city in the Estonian language and use the historical one. He noted that such a decision had already been made by Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. At the same time, it was proposed to use the name Yamburg or Yaama for the Russian city of Kingisepa in the Leningrad region.
The commission submitted this issue to the language commission of the Mother Language Society, which determines the standards of the Estonian language. It is planned to continue discussing this issue in October.
Kaliningrad was founded in 1255 by the Knights of the Teutonic Order as a fortress and named Königsberg, which means “royal mountain”. After the end of World War II, by decision of the Potsdam Conference in 1945, the northern part of the German province of East Prussia, along with its capital Königsberg, was temporarily transferred to the USSR. Later, when border treaties were signed, the Koenigsberg region was fully recognized as the possessions of the Soviet Union. In 1946, the city was renamed Kaliningrad in honor of the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Mikhail Kalinin.
