“Spartak” did not miss the victory – Newspaper Kommersant No. 195 (7396) of 10/20/2022

Spartak maintained its impeccable performance in the Russian Cup, having won a rather difficult away victory over Fakel with a score of 2:1 in the fourth round of the group stage of the tournament. But another metropolitan grand – CSKA made the first cup misfire. At home, the army team lost to Torpedo – 0:1.
“Spartak” continued its winning streak in the Russian Cup, having played a very good match in terms of entertainment, degree of tension against the Voronezh “Torch”. The staginess can be judged at least by this figure: even before the break, the rivals managed to give as many as a damn dozen corners for two. At the same time, it cannot be said that the sharpness of the game was provided exclusively by a much more status club. In the first half, there was a rather long, about a quarter of an hour, segment, when the Torch seriously ruffled Spartak, and the guests’ forward Shamar Nicholson could be seen inside his own penalty area more often than on the edge of the attack. But what to do if the situation demanded his presence there?
Still, the Spartacists were able to open the scoring right before the break thanks to another amazing maneuver. The Fakel players did not keep track of Nikolai Rasskazov, who jumped into the pass from the flank, and there was nothing strange in their inattention. In theory, at this point, at the goalkeeper’s line, the Spartak defender could not find himself in any way.
Soon after the rest at Spartak, the player who was supposed to close the attacks, that is, Nicholson, who worked for the benefit of the defense, distinguished himself already. And it seemed that the guests would no longer have problems. They, however, appeared when the Spartak defender Miha Mevlya hooked the ball with his hand close to the gate. “Torch” scored from the penalty spot (“Spartak”, thus, missed the first goal in the current Cup), but did not achieve more, having not yet managed to score a single point in the tournament, while the Moscow club already has 12 of them His pursuers – “Wings of the Soviets” and “Zenith”, which in the first round managed to lose both the Samara team and “Spartak” and is located not so far from the Voronezh, at a distance of a “clean” victory, will meet today.
CSKA, which, like Spartak, collected the maximum number of points in the first round, also played against a team that returned to the Russian football elite this season, but its match turned out to be much more difficult. The army team missed a quick goal from Torpedo due to the clumsiness of Maxim Mukhin. In the fight for the ball in his penalty area, he waved his legs like a kickboxer and cut down Damien Le Tallec. It was not Igor Akinfeev who stood at the gates of CSKA on this dank Moscow evening, but his backup Vladislav Torop, and he almost took a penalty kick from Mario Churic. Torop hooked the ball with his feet, but he somehow found his way into the net.
And after that, CSKA, of course, terribly wanted to show who was still the favorite here, and settled tightly on the Torpedo team. They fought back and kept the advantage until the pause, also thanks to luck: Ivan Oblyakov’s seemingly flawless goal was canceled after VAR saw that the army team had managed to break the rules before him.
The new Torpedo coach Andrey Talalaev surprised with the number of substitutions made during the break (there were three of them – the same number as Talalaev’s colleague from CSKA Vladimir Fedotov made, although the score absolutely suited the guests), and his team with the solidity with which they played after them. It was absolutely not the case when the club listed below survives, endures until the final whistle. The torpedoes used a different strategy and at least tried their best to bite in response to army attacks. So their win was well deserved. And he allowed “Torpedo” to get close to the still leading group D CSKA at a distance of three points.
The second match of the fourth round in this quartet will take place today. In it, the failing Sochi with its zero points will be taken by Ural, which, like Torpedo, has six, that is, three less than CSKA.
In group A, the fourth round was completed by the match between Pari Nizhny Novgorod and Krasnodar. Nizhny Novgorod won it – 1:0, and Konstantin Shiltsov scored the decisive goal at the beginning of the second half. And this result deprived Khimki, which lost to Lokomotiv the day before, with their only point so far, the chances, even remotely similar to real ones, to break into the playoffs. Nizhny Novgorod meanwhile climbed to the first position in the group. True, Lokomotiv, with equal points, is ahead of them in additional indicators, while Krasnodar is only one point behind. These three teams in the remaining two rounds will determine who will play in the “upper”, more profitable, play-off bracket (the two strongest will get into it), and who will play in the lower one.
The funniest match of the day was played in Orenburg. The local club and Akhmat scored six goals against each other, and the hosts took the top – 4:2, with this result confusing the tournament situation in group C to the limit. Before the fourth round, Orenburg seemed to be a clear outsider of the quartet, but now every team in it can take any place in the table from the first to the fourth. On the top line is Dynamo, which defeated Rostov the day before. The Rostovites and Akhmat are one point behind him, the Orenburgers are two points behind.
