The creation of such a launch vehicle cost the company approximately $500 million. It was originally created to launch the Crew Dragon manned spacecraft and missions to the Moon and Mars. However, after the first launch of the rocket, Elon Musk announced that it would only be used to deliver heavy satellites into orbit. Subsequently, SpaceX plans to replace the Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy rockets and Dragon spacecraft with a reusable rocket and space system that combines a launch vehicle and a ship. This project was presented in September 2017 at the International Astronautics Congress in Adelaide (Australia) and received the code name BFR (Big Falcon Rocket). In November 2018, Elon Musk announced that the BFR had been renamed Starship (from English “starship”).
