Blockchain developer Solana will release a new version of the crypto smartphone. The previous model surpassed the flagship iPhone in price in December 2023. However, for the creators of the device, everything was not so successful at the beginning. The company launched sales of the first gadget in the spring of 2023. According to the developers, it was designed specifically for those who trade tokens; for example, the crypto smartphone could support decentralized applications. However, the model did not gain popularity until Solana began distributing free tokens to device owners in the fall. After this, the price of the Saga Phone on the secondary market soared from $600 to $5 thousand, which is 3.5 times more than the cost of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The new smartphone model from Solana, as the company promised, should become more budget-friendly. But why does a blockchain developer need a gadget of his own production in principle? “Kommersant FM” discussed this issue with Bestchange.ru senior analyst Nikita Zubarev: “Solana is a second-tier project, which has been known on the crypto market for quite some time. At the same time, he often appears in the information field precisely because of his interesting ideas.
Apparently this is one of the promotions. There is currently no technical need to develop a separate smartphone.
But overall, this is an interesting precedent, because such devices can be built into some hardware solutions that will simplify work with various blockchains. Meanwhile, now you can create a crypto wallet from any smartphone. Naturally, most of them use the simplest encryption possible, which is found in any browser.
If you develop some custom solutions, this will further increase the security of the modules that will store the keys. This is a promising technology in itself, but you need to look at the specific content of each such device. After all, the distribution of tokens is, of course, interesting, but this was done precisely in order to capture the market and create some kind of sensation so that it would all be sold.”
The boom in popularity of the Saga smartphone ensured an increase in quotes for the Bonk token, which was distributed to device owners by Solana. The electronic coin rose in price by 10,000% in December. So the free tokens that the owners of the gadget were entitled to paid for its cost many times over.
However, Bonk may soon lose its position, noted Philip Vasiliev, portfolio manager of the Hardcore Capital Labs fund. True, in his opinion, this will not make Solana smartphones less attractive on the market: “Bonk is a unique example of a meme token that has no real value, they simply follow trends. In this case, it was a trend in the wake of Elon Musk’s posts, when he published how a Shiba Inu hit various objects with a bat. And such a post turned into its own token, which people began to buy.
Why do meme tokens even exist in crypto? Because they are a big driver for retail users who purchase them just to send them to a friend, to laugh, or simply to speculate on the price of assets.
But the creators of blockchain have opened a Pandora’s box in terms of marketing. They understood how to influence active users of their ecosystem. You make a meme token, launch it, it gains popularity, and new users come to you.
This has a good effect, first of all, on your assessment, which you then demonstrate to investors. You can promise users that in the future they can receive some kind of token, and again they will come running, thereby completing the actions that you need as a developer.”
Meanwhile, tech bloggers from all over the world call Saga Phone one of the failures of the year. In their opinion, the market does not need the device itself, without the free tokens attached to it, although it has characteristics comparable to Samsung’s flagship models. Solana has not launched direct sales of the gadget in Russia, but the smartphone is available on eBay to holders of accounts on foreign marketplaces.
