Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that the location of the mosque, which was supposed to be built near the Holy Lake in the Kosino-Ukhtomsky district, would be changed. A site near the Kosino metro station will be allocated for the construction of the mosque. He also said that the size of the mosque will be much smaller than previously reported.
The mayor of the city stressed that there was no decision of the Moscow government regarding the construction – the proposal itself was only considered by the commission. Mr. Sobyanin referred to appeals from Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ and Ravil Gainutdin, Chairman of the Spiritual Board of Muslims of the Russian Federation, who asked to find another place for the mosque.
“For its construction, a land plot will be allocated not far from the Kosino metro station, between the future MCD-3 diameter, the Moscow High-Speed Diameter and the Moscow Ring Road. Within walking distance from the metro and MCD stations,” said Mr. Sobyanin in Telegram.
“On the one hand, the mosque will not interfere with the residents of nearby houses. On the other hand, it will be in good transport accessibility. The area around the mosque will be landscaped and accessible for walking in the same way as we do in Orthodox churches,” the mayor added.
As Sergei Sobyanin assured, the new mosque will be “very modest”: 2.5 thousand square meters. m, not 40 thousand square meters. m, as previously stated.
Since March, in the Kosino-Ukhtomsky district of Moscow, residents have been protesting against the construction of a mosque near the Holy Lake, which is considered revered by the Orthodox. Opponents of the construction were criticized by the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. According to him, the instigators of the protests are acting in the interests of Western intelligence agencies and are trying to create a split between the citizens of Russia. “If all these rally participants wholeheartedly and wholeheartedly came up with the idea of defending the Russian land, then forward to the trenches with a machine gun!” — the head of the region wrote in his Telegram channel.
