Snowdrifts in Moscow may repeat the 1956 record

Up to 20% of the monthly precipitation will fall on Moscow in a day, and snowdrifts will grow to a record height of 68 years ago. This forecast was given on Wednesday, February 14, by the leading specialist of the Phobos weather center, Evgeny Tishkovets.

As the meteorologist wrote in his Telegram channel, on Thursday Central Russia will be covered by an atmospheric front of occlusion, accompanied by many snow clouds. Due to fresh and fluffy snow, the snowdrifts will grow to at least 60 centimeters, and this is a repeat of the record figures of 1956.

On the last working day of the week it will also snow, but not as intensely – only 2-3 millimeters will fall.

According to the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia Roman Vilfand, temperatures are expected in 80% of Russia by the end of the week below normal climatic values. In the center of the European part of the country, temperatures will drop 12–14°C below average.

Meanwhile in Russia there were ranking of the snowiest cities. Specialists from the Gismeteo portal analyzed the depth of snow cover in 27 Russian cities. The leader in the height of snowdrifts was Saransk (96 cm).
