Deputies of the Smolensk City Council unanimously voted for the resignation of the head of Smolensk Andrey Borisov. Earlier, the mayor filed a letter of resignation of his own free will.
Speaking to the city council, Mr. Borisov explained this decision by the change in the leadership of the region: “A new team has arrived, headed by Vasily Anokhin, so the change of the head of the administration of Smolensk is natural. Thanks to the Smolensk people for almost five years of working together. Special thanks to the active Smolensk people for their criticism, which helped us in our work.”
Temporarily acting as mayor will be his first deputy Alexander Novikov. In a conversation with a Kommersant correspondent, he found it difficult to say whether he would participate in the competition for the position, but noted that he had already begun to take his first steps as a city leader. “This is a large joint program with the acting governor of the Smolensk region Vasily Anokhin to improve the comfort of the residents of Smolensk,” Mr. Novikov added.
Recall, in March, the LDPR governor Alexei Ostrovsky resigned. Vasily Anokhin, a native of the government apparatus of the Russian Federation, replaced him as acting interim. Elections of the governor of the Smolensk region are scheduled for September.
