Sled dog race “Nadezhda” crossed the equator

On Sunday, April 7, the participants in the Nadezhda sled dog race (6+) took a break, and the mushers and dogs had a day of rest. The day before, the athletes finished in the village of Provideniya, having completed five stages out of nine. In this segment, the oldest participant in the race, Dmitry Kalyavukvun, showed the best time, reports Chukotka news agency.
The first to complete the stage between Yanrakynnot and Provideniya was 67-year-old Dmitry Kalyavukvun. His team covered a 77-kilometer section in just over 6.5 hours. After 40 minutes, Albert Rultycheyvun came to the finish line second, and Gennady Tomilov showed the third result.
“The track is difficult, after the snowstorm there is a lot of loose snow, so the speed of the sleds is low. In Provideniya, all mushers were well received, tomorrow the athletes and dogs have a day of rest, and on Monday, if everything goes well, it is planned to start to the westernmost point of the race route – the village of Sireniki,” the correspondent was informed. News Agency “Chukotka” on the competition organizing committee.
In the overall standings, the top three remained the same. Despite the not very good result of the final stage, Gennady Tomilov from the village of Lorino is in first place with a result of 28 hours and 20 minutes. His fellow villager Dmitry Kalyavukvun reduced the gap from the leader to 40 minutes, and Inchoun resident Albert Rultycheyvun is an hour behind him.
Let us remind you that the Nadezhda sled dog race started from the village of Inchoun on April 1 with a two-day delay, which was caused by bad weather. The 626 km route passes through the settlements of the Chukotka and Providensky districts from Inchoun to Sireniki and back with the finish in Lorino. The prize fund for this year’s competition is 3 million 850 thousand rubles. The winner will receive 1 million, the rest of the money will be distributed among the finishing mushers. The race is held with the support of the government of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug to preserve the unique heritage of the peoples of the region and popularize sledding sports. The competition has been held since 1991.
