Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev today, October 25, announced that 385 thousand people have entered military service since January 2023. According to him, they all act in the interests of a joint group of troops performing combat missions in the zone of military operation in Ukraine.
“Almost 385 thousand people entered military service. Of these, 305 thousand are contract servicemen, and about 80 thousand are volunteers. The pace of selection for military service under contract has increased significantly; every day more than 1.6 thousand people enter into contracts with the armed forces,”— reported Mr. Medvedev during an operational meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Defense.
According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to continue work to increase the staffing level of the Russian army in 2024. Dmitry Medvedev said that he was entrusted with overseeing this area. The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council noted that Russians en masse enter into contracts with the Ministry of Defense because of “the high patriotic spirit and desire to defend their homeland.”
At the end of 2022, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu proposed increasing the size of the armed forces from the current 1.1 million to 1.5 million military personnel, including the number of contract employees – up to 695 thousand.
