According to the Daily Mail tabloid, it comes five months after the “monster” was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole for killing seven newborn babies and attempting to kill six more.

Having a key to her cell means Lethby, 34, can lock herself out from her cellmates if she feels threatened by them, explains the Daily Mail.

The keys are believed to be given to Category A residents of HMP Bronzefield as a reward for good behavior in prison.

This information has caused considerable distress to the grieving parents of the Letby victims.

“We thought they had thrown away the key and now we find out she has her own key,” one parent told The Sunday People.

A prison source told the newspaper that the VIP regime meant Letby could socialize with others if he wanted, but could also have privacy if he wanted.

The source said it was “no different than staying in a hotel, but you’re surrounded by criminals.”

Lucy Lethby was previously transferred to Bronzefield from Low Newton Prison in County Durham.

It comes after child killer Letby reportedly “became friends in prison” with two other killers while she was in custody ahead of her trial in August.

Lethby was said to be linked to Michelle Smith, the woman who killed her own 42-day-old baby, and Shona Hoare, who helped kill 16-year-old schoolgirl Becky Watts.

A source told The Mirror that the killer trio played board games together and sat next to each other when it came to meals.

“They were together 24 hours a day – they were a well-known threesome and were literally never apart,” sources said.

Lucy Letby, originally from Hereford, was convicted of attacking babies in the neonatal ward of the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015 and 2016, the Daily Mail recalls.

Last September, it was announced that the serial killer would face a retrial on one count of attempted murder of a newborn girl.

Nick Johnson, prosecuting, told Manchester Crown Court that a retrial had been made for Baby K, a girl born in February 2016.

The child’s parents were present in court to hear the announcement. Letby attended the hour-long hearing via video link while the baby’s parents were away.

The prosecution is not seeking a retrial on five other attempted murder charges involving four infants – two girls, Baby H and Baby J, and two boys, Baby N and Baby Q.

Lucy Letby refused to leave her cell when Judge Goss sentenced her to 14 life terms following her sentencing on August 21. She applied for leave to appeal her convictions.

Letby appealed all her convictions in September.

Chester Labor MP Samantha Dixon criticized prison bosses for the decision to give Letby a key to her cell, saying it “doesn’t seem right or fair”.

A spokesman for HMP Bronzefield prison told The Sunday People: “Prisoners in some of our main units have a key to the cell they are in so they can secure their personal belongings.”
