At the request of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, employees of St. Petersburg State University conducted an examination of Sergei Shnurov’s song “Repentant,” dedicated to the Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov. In the composition, experts found fakes that negatively affect the governor’s reputation. The musician said that he agreed with the expert’s conclusion, but added that “it is impossible to spoil something that does not exist.”

“I completely agree with the conclusion of respected experts. In disputes about reputation, if it were up to me, I would take its presence into account. It’s impossible to spoil something that doesn’t exist,” said Mr. Shnurov RBC.

The song “Repentant” was released in early 2022. It was a “response” to criticism of another song by the musician, in which he accused the governor of poor quality snow removal and garbage collection in the city. In “Repentant,” Sergei Shnurov “takes the blame” for the problems in the city and declares that he now “loves Beglov.”

Experts came to the conclusion that the composition is sarcastic in nature. They argue that the negative images in the song are not presented as reliable information, but rather show the musician’s negative attitude towards the governor. According to the examination, such a one-sided presentation of information could harm the reputation, honor and dignity of Mr. Beglov.
