In matters of contraception, the Russians go on the defensive

The Russians continue to amaze with their unpredictability and inconsistency. The other day, the media conducted a survey: to prevent abortions in Russia or not. Most agreed that it should. Against the backdrop of the ongoing demographic catastrophe, the topic is burning.

The birth rate is at its peak and each subsequent month hits historical anti-records. Citizens are not against the desire of the state to control the intimate process of childbearing. But they agree, as it were, abstractly, but purely for themselves, they want to do as they want. And the survey showed this perfectly.

Saying one thing and thinking something completely different is so in Russian.

The All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) conducted a survey on the attitude to abortion among Russians. The study involved 1.6 thousand respondents over 18 years old.

47% of respondents agree that the authorities should take measures to prevent abortion (a year ago there were 36%).

Today, 39% are against the interference of the authorities in family life, and in 2022, 51% thought so.

But along with such seemingly ideologically correct results, at the same time 55% were categorically against limiting the sale of drugs for contraception, including emergency contraception, that is, when there was unprotected sex and there is a suspicion that pregnancy may occur. But in this, it seems to me, there is an insurmountable contradiction.

In fact, subconsciously, the majority of even the most loyal citizens to any actions of the authorities understand that by intervening in the sphere of child production, the state pursues exclusively its own utilitarian interests. Someone has to work in factories, pay taxes, protect borders.

And people seem to agree with all this, but … On a very specific issue: do you want to be banned from freely selling contraception, more than half answered that no, we don’t, because they probably immediately tried this ban on themselves.

Affairs of national importance – affairs, and, if anything, the parents themselves will have to feed the unplanned spinogryz. Especially when the pathos-fastened “be fruitful and multiply” a friend turns into “the state did not ask you to give birth.”

And now men are also offered to turn sex into walking through a minefield. Will fly – will not fly. And if it flies, and even the interruption is forbidden, then what to do?

Many Russian families, for various reasons, postpone the birth of a child until sometime later. Especially second children. And the third – so generally change their minds. And this is also a statistic. And that’s actually okay. Not wanting to release a new person into such a complex world for whom you are responsible, and when there are fewer and fewer opportunities to bear it …

And if the state does not agree with this, then let it give birth by itself …
