Seven out of ten men in the world are obese

Currently, two-thirds of men on the planet are overweight or obese, and they are especially prone to be overweight in middle age.
A new study clearly illustrates the obesity epidemic. If in 1993 only 13 percent of men suffered from obesity, now there are already 25 of them.
According to the results of the survey, the proportion of men who are overweight or obese has increased from 58 per cent (1993) to 69 per cent.
Of course, these figures should be treated with caution, as this is the first year that, due to Covid, people’s weight and height are reported over the phone instead of being measured by an interviewer at their home. However, they are similar to the results of recent years. Moreover, both pensioners (from 65 to 74 years old) and middle-aged people (from 45 to 54 years old) are most prone to weight problems.
On average, the body mass index for men is still higher than for women. The average weight of men has increased from 78.9 kg (1993) to 85.1 kg (2021). Women also put on weight – on average from 66.6 kg to 71.8 kg.
The main increase in obesity occurred between 1993 and 2001, and the rate has generally increased since then.
Obesity and type 2 diabetes, which is closely associated with it, can lead to complications such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney problems.
More than half of obese people – 51 percent – had at least one long-term condition, compared with 36 percent of people who were not overweight or obese.
In general, the survey shows that body mass index increases with age and is highest between the ages of 47 and 74.
