Senator Lenar Safin appointed Rector of KFU

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has appointed Lenar Safin, Senator from the Republic of Tatarstan, Rector of Kazan Federal University (KFU) for a five-year term. Mr. Safin’s candidacy for this post was nominated by the Supervisory Board of the university chaired by Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov on March 24.
“To appoint Safin Lenar Rinatovich as the rector of the federal state autonomous educational institution of higher education Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University for a period of 5 years,” reads a government decree published on portal legal information.
Lenar Safin’s candidacy for the post of rector of KFU was agreed Ministry of Education April 19. Since March 9, the senator has been under personal EU sanctions. Thus, he will become practically the only head of a Russian higher education institution to be included in the EU and US sanctions lists. Previously, US sanctions were imposed only against the rector of Skoltech Alexander Kuleshov.
From 2010 to 2021, the rector of KFU was Ilshat Gafurov, who was arrested on charges of organizing a murder.
Lenar Safin served as Minister of Transport and Road Facilities of the Republic of Tatarstan from 2010 to 2020. He is a candidate of legal sciences, defended his thesis on the topic “Responsibility of convicts for malicious evasion of punishments not related to isolation from society in Russian criminal law” in 2004 at Kazan State University named after V. I. Ulyanov-Lenin.
