Senator Khokhlova announced a decrease in the number of identified orphans by 3% in 2022

In 2022, 45,332 children were identified in Russia as orphans and children left without parental care, which is 3% lower than in 2021, said Olga Khokhlova, a member of the Federation Council, in her Telegram channel based on the results of the meeting of the working group “The well-being of families with children” at the coordinating council for the decade of childhood under the government of the Russian Federation.

The senator said the number of children awaiting adoption last year was 37,678. According to Ms. Khokhlova, the number of such children in Russia is also declining.

“The number of children in respect of whom both or the only parent are deprived of parental rights, at the end of 2022, amounted to 19,299 people, which is 2% lower than in 2021. The trend is positive, but there is still work to be done,” the Federation Council member wrote.

According to data The Ministry of Education for 2021, the country is home to 391 thousand orphans and children whose parents do not fulfill their duties or are deprived of their rights – this is about 2% of all children in Russia. Of these, 35.3 thousand are in organizations for orphans and 4.5 thousand are under the care of government agencies.

Compared to 2014, there are one and a half times less orphans in Russia, analysts from the Road of Life Foundation calculated. Experts attribute this to a drop in the birth rate, a reduction in the abandonment of infants and disabled children, and a softening of the policy to deprive parental rights.
