Scientists warn of an unexpected cause of dementia

Researchers at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis have found a potential link between long-term use of proton pump inhibitors, heartburn drugs, and an increased risk of dementia. These studies are published in the journal Neurology.
The study involved 5712 people. According to the results of the study, people who use proton pump inhibitors for more than 4.4 years have a 33% higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who have never used these drugs. However, the use of proton pump inhibitors for less than 4.4 years is not associated with an increased risk of dementia.
These drugs are used to treat reflux disease (GERD), which is characterized by the frequent release of stomach acid into the esophagus, which can cause heartburn. While maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help control GERD, many patients require medication.
At the same time, the scientists noted that the study does not prove a direct causal relationship between proton pump inhibitors and dementia, but only indicates a possible correlation. Discontinuation of such drugs should be under medical supervision, as abrupt discontinuation may aggravate symptoms.
