An international team of scientists collected fish samples near the Japanese port of Hisanohama, which is located near Fukushima-1, reports Reuters. This is the first study on the condition of fish since Japan began reset water from a nuclear power plant in August this year. The samples collected under the supervision of IAEA specialists will be sent to laboratories in China, South Korea and Canada to obtain independent and most objective verification results.
“The Japanese government asked us to do this, and one of the reasons they want us to do this is to try to build confidence in the data that Japan is providing,” said IAEA scientist overseeing the study, Paul McGinnity.
In 2011, an accident occurred at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant caused by a tsunami. The water, which was then used to cool the reactors, was stored in tanks after purification. On August 24, nuclear power plant operator Tokyo Electric Power began releasing water purified from radioactive substances into the ocean. China opposed the release of water, which banned import of Japanese fish and seafood. October 16, import of fish and seafood from Japan limited and Russia. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan expressed regretted Russia’s decision and called on the Russian side to lift the restrictions.
