Scientists: Pets help you avoid becoming stupid as you age

Biologists from the United States have concluded that having pets allows owners to maintain high mental abilities longer.

Scientists analyzed information about 637 volunteers aged 51 to 101 years, which was collected over a long period of time. The results of cognitive tests showed that this indicator depended on age, but decreased significantly more slowly in dog and cat owners. This was most noticeable in measures such as memory, executive function, processing speed, language function, and psychomotor speed.

Cats turned out to be especially “effective” for maintaining good memory and speech functions, but in general it was most useful not only to have an animal, but also to walk it.

The results do not allow us to definitively say that animals help maintain cognitive abilities (there may be some other connection between these factors), but scientists who published an article in the journal Scientific Reports consider this interpretation quite likely.
