Scientists from Skoltech and the University of MISIS have developed a technology that makes it possible to reduce the cost of manufacturing a special dental instrument for cleaning dental canals using selective laser melting (SLM).
Dentists, when cleaning dental root canals, use a special dental file. It is a small tube, inside of which there is a flat mesh with increased flexibility. Thanks to her, the file can adapt to almost any anatomical shape of the canal, cleaning it before placing a seal.
These self-adapting files are laser-cut from titanium nickelide, a corrosion-resistant material with high biocompatibility and superelastic properties. However, during the production of blanks for tools, there is usually quite a lot of waste and expensive material is used very inefficiently. The technology proposed by scientists from the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and MISIS will make it possible to produce self-adaptive files using selective laser melting, which will reduce and reduce the cost of production.
As co-author of the study Stanislav Chernyshikhin, a graduate student at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, said, instead of “removing” a large amount of material from the workpiece, the SLM method assumes its layer-by-layer “adding” during printing. Thus, due to the possibility of repeated use of the powder, the amount of waste will be reduced by up to 70%.
In the future, the resulting files will be tested by scientists from the Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry on dental models.
