Scientists have identified people who can wake up during operations

Neuroscientists at Trinity College have discovered areas of the brain that are responsible for the predisposition to awaken from anesthesia during operations. About it writes scientific publication Human Brain Mapping.
According to scientists, every fourth patient in the operating room can dream, and a much smaller percentage of people – only 0.05-0.2% – are able to remain conscious. Statistics showed that in one third of the cases when the patient woke up from anesthesia, the operation was impossible to complete.
In their experiment, neuroscientists injected 17 people with the most common type of anesthesia, propofol. After that, the scientists assessed the response of the sedated patients to the sounds and compared them with the results obtained without anesthesia.
It turned out that people more resistant to anesthesia had a feature of the structure of the brain: such patients had a large volume of gray matter in the frontal areas and a stronger functional connection in the fronto-parietal networks of the brain.
This means that people with these features will need a large dose of propofol.
