Scientists from the United States conducted a study and found that the risk of fatal dementia in older people doubles after coronavirus. This is stated in an article published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Experts analyzed data from more than 6 million patients aged 65 years and older. It turned out that the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease during the year in people with coronavirus increases by 50-80%. The risk is highest in women over 85 years of age.
At the same time, it is not completely clear whether covid causes a new development of Alzheimer’s disease or accelerates its onset. It is noted that infection with coronavirus is associated with pathological processes in the central nervous system.
If the trend of developing Alzheimer’s disease in people who have had coronavirus continues, this could further drain the resources of the healthcare system, the scientists concluded.
